The
essence of garage wine is when a crazy
dream and a huge passion for wine
becomes a reality, follows you home
and ends up becoming a special part
of your every day life. This is what
happened to Clive Torr and Tanja Beutler
at 26 Topaz Street.
A
qualified winemaker and the youngest
Cape Wine Master, Clive has been making
one barrel of wine each year in his
garage for several years. When it
comes to harvesting, pressing, bottling
or labeling, he manages to get all
his friends to pitch in, with the
promise of a few delicious wines while
they work!
Tanja
has also worked in the South African
wine industry for a number of years,
mainly in administration, marketing
and sales. In May 2000, Clive and
Tanja bought a quaint little house
on Topaz Street, 15 km away from Stellenbosch
and about 2 km away from the sea.
The back garden hadn't been developed,
and the easy decision to plant Pinot
Noir vines was made.
Now,
this is where Tanja decided to take
Clive's dream and turn it into a reality.
She started her own business from
home called Topaz Wine and registered
26 Topaz Street as a farm and as a
producer of wine, the smallest registered
producer in South Africa!
Topaz
wines are handcrafted, made totally
naturally in their garage along biodynamic
principles. Their philosophy of when
to drink their wines: You don't have
to wait for a special occasion to
drink great wine, let the wine make
the occasion!
